Stealing the Ceiling

Posted Dec 28th, 2008 by Conor

My band (yes I own the band!) The Dominican Affair are about to record our first album. I’m not really sure if you could call it an album – it’s more like an EP really. But never the less I am excited.

We had our first practice in about a month today. It was OK, that’s it! Lately we have been going downhill as a band, only ever meeting up for gigs and the like. But we have pooled our gig money over the last few months and now we finally have enough to record! Hopefully we will get going again now and this recording will give us a bit of inspiration. We are going to practice flat out over the next two weeks for the recording in Tommy Flack’s Attic Studios on the 16th and the 17th.

The album/EP will be called ‘Stealing the Ceiling’ and will have six tracks:

  1. Euphoria (Behind the Fridge)
  2. Blood Apple
  3. Rock Against the Treaty
  4. Fish Bowl
  5. Invisible
  6. Cannonball

We have been playing for about a year and a half now and we only have six songs! But they are six good ones and that’s the main thing! They are numbered in the order that they were written. I think that we will put them on the EP in that order because it will show the progression of our genre and musical style. There really is a great range of genre in those songs. The earlier tracks are heavier and the later popier (if that is a word) with the exception of the last song which is pretty heavy (for us anyway).

Hopefully if all goes well we will launch it in good old Mc Kennas in the start of February. At the moment Luke is still working on the Artwork which knowing him will be brilliant! He designed the original Dominican Affair logo. You can see my photoshopped-up version of that logo as the skin at the bands bebo site. On a different subject something like that could never be created on GIMP so I really need to get my photoshop working on Linux! We are still considering possibly also doing a second launch in Deery’s for “the older generation”!

That’s about it. I will have the music up on the blog once its recorded and don’t hesitate to order one! It will be about €7.

Agh my eyes!!! please do something with that theme! every time I move my mouse the whole screen flashes.

I’d suggest changing the order – put your best tracks near the beginning. otherwise people will start listening to the CD and possibly throw it away if they start by listening to your early mistakes and think the whole album is like that.

Not that I’m saying your music sucks – just that you say yourself that the later tracks are more musically mature, so why not show them off early?

Looking forward to hearing them. Cannonball? related to the song by The Breeders?

ok i got rid of the flashy thing!

The order there is how I want it – the rest of the band might think differently about it! There is reasoning behind that order though. I don’t think that any of the tracks have “early mistakes” because if there were mistakes then we would not be recording them! All the tracks are musically distinct and I cannot say which one is the best. Quite a lot of people think that the first song we wrote, Euphoria, is the best but it really is a matter of opinion.

The reason i suggest having them in that order is not because of the music slowly gets better, it’s because it shows the progression of our genre, style and skill to a certain extent. Think of it as a summary of ZZ Top albums. They are all great, but at the same time they show a wide variety of genre.

Anyway most of the people buying the CD will know our music and they will know what to expect! If they throw it away then it’s their loss!

Yeah The Breeders stole our name :-)
